This video will show you how to install the AlumiConn connector for aluminum wiring retrofitting to drastically reduce the related fire hazards in your home.

**WARNING** - the installation of the AlumiConn in and of itself is very easy. But, because of the experience and finesse one must have to pack all the wiring and connectors into the device box without stressing or damaging the aluminum wire, it is not recommended for amateurs to do. Only electricians experienced with working on aluminum wire retrofitting are recommended for installation of AlumiConns or any other connector for that matter.
Although this procedure is accurate to the manufacturers installation instructions; because amateur manipulation of the wiring can make things worse, therefore Scott Ryan is not responsible for any damages incurred by yourself while following this procedure.
This video is purely for information purposes and hopefully to help you find a knowledgeable electrician who recommends this amongst the only 3 approved methods.
Aluminum Wiring Repair
There are only 3 methods of correcting aluminum wiring hazards according to Dr. Aronstein's-backed Consumer Product Safety Commission Report – “ Repairing Aluminum Wiring “:
1. replace aluminum wiring with copper wiring - the best, but very expensive and in most cases unnecessary because of the other 2 options.
Aluminum Wiring Pigtail
2. pigtailing with Copalum - according to Dr. Jesse Aronstein a scientist and engineer who has researched over 7,500 aluminum wiring connections, burnouts and their solutions for over 30 years and made recommendations for the United States government, has verified no failures with Copalum Crimp
connectors.
3. pigtailing with AlumiConn - although the AlumiConn connector appeared relatively recent in the marketplace in 2006 - the design and the results of extensive testing by Dr. Aronstein reveal this to be a reliable connector for the permanent repair of aluminum wiring connection fire hazards. Also, because its design is based on connectors which have been used for decades successfully and is different from the twist-on variety, it is projected there will be no failures with the AlumiConns.
The two latter methods use "pigtailing", which is the term used to describe the making of aluminum to copper connections.
Aluminum Wire Nuts
There are other connectors being touted as permanent repairs such as Ideal #65 or Aluminum-rated Marrettes.
Connectors of the twist-on variety are also known as “ wire nuts “.
According to the research completed by Dr. Aronstein and others over the decades of research in this field, these "twist-on" connectors -- or ANY twist-on connector -- should be used ONLY as a temporary repair. It has been discovered they are failing at an alarming rate.
These should only be used in the situation where the other 3 are not available or affordable.
And then, every connection should be checked once yearly and tightened or repaired accordingly.
There are other connectors and methods promoted by many self-proclaimed “experts” in aluminum wiring repair that flat-out dangerous. Follow their advice at your own risk.
These included the aluminum rated devices such as receptacles and switches. You’ll know them by the COALR, CO ALR or similar letters stamped on them. These devices have been proven by Dr. Aronstein to fail at an alarming rate as well.
Again, use them if none of the other permanent repair recommendations like the AlumiConn are not available or affordable. However, the same advice goes as for the twist-on variety of connectors. Check them at a fairly regular interval to catch any burnouts occurring – before it’s too late.
