LIS is Low Income Subsidy, known as Extra Help for Prescription Drugs, which is a federal benefit, provided by Social Security to help with the out of pocket costs of prescriptions. How does it help Medicare Beneficiaries? It helps with Part D plan premium, plan deductibles, co-pays and coinsurances, and any penalties if applicable, also it offers pure gap (donut hole) protection. Who is eligible? Anyone who receives Medicare benefits may be eligible. The program is means based, meaning, that there are income and asset limitations. Assets that will NOT be counted will include the home you reside, vehicle you own, life insurance or burial plans.
