There must be about a hundred different ways to sew a hemstitch at the beginning and end of your woven items - this is the method I use. Whether I am working on my Rigid Heddle Loom or on my table or floor loom, if my weaving is going to have a fringe ( as opposed to a turned hem), I hemstitch the beginning and end, and this is the method that I use.
It is important to take your stitch a few picks into the body of the weaving as this gives a solid and stable foundation which won't pull out.
To my mind, there are few things that look less neat and professional on a beautiful woven piece, than an edge which is finished with a clumsy overhand knot. The Hemstitch gives a neat, subtle and professional finish to anything that is going to have a fringe. It is NOT necessary to tie the fringe off if you have already hemstitched it.
