The Cathedral of Braga, the oldest archdiocese in Portugal, is the symbol of the city. Erected in the 12th century by order of D. Henrique and D. Teresa, it rivaled with the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
Bearing witness to art through the centuries, it preserves Romanesque elements such as the Porta do Sol, the floor plan with its ambulatory, and Gothic works like the gallery providing access to the temple.
Inside lies the Gothic-Flemish tomb of the infant D. Afonso, son of D. João I. Under D. Manuel, additional decorative elements were added, including the baptismal fonts and a statue of Our Lady of Milk attributed to Nicolas Chantereine, depicted on the city's emblem.
