A study has shown not a single emperor penguin chick survived spring in parts of Antarctica.
The catastrophic loss of the species has been attributed to climate change, with the year being called the hottest on record.
It also coincides with record low sea ice coverage, as emperor penguins rely on sea ice for breeding.
Even though it was predicted, the rapidly declining rates have prompted fears for the future of the animal.
