Peschici is a town and comune in the province of Foggia in the Apulia region of southeast Italy. Famous for its seaside resorts, its territory belongs to the Gargano National Park and to the Gargano Mountain Community. Peschici is situated on the north-eastern coast of Gargano promontory, 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) east of San Menaio, 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) from Rodi Garganico, and 19 kilometres (12 mi) west of Vieste. The town sits over a karst spur facing the sea, with a height of more than 100 metres (330 ft); the territory features a number of coastal watch towers. Flora includes sectors of Mediterranean shrubland and, in the inner areas, Aleppo pines. 32 Kilometers north east of the town Peschici, is the Croatian Island of Palagruža. The lexicographer Giacomo Micaglia was born in Peschici.
Renowned seaside resort, for the quality of its bathing water has been repeatedly awarded the Blue Flag by the Foundation for Environmental Education. A peculiarity of the place is that during the summer you can enjoy the sunrise and its sunset in the crystal clear waters of the Adriatic Sea; moreover, on days when the sky is particularly clear, some islands belonging to the Croatian coast can be glimpsed.
Peschici is located on the north coast of the Gargano , in the middle of a stretch of coast, partly sandy and partly rocky, between the Bay of Calenella ( Vico del Gargano ) to the west and the bay of Sfinale ( Vieste ) to the east. 30 nautical miles (47 kilometers) across the Adriatic to the northwest will separate it from the Tremiti Islands archipelago.
Byzantine Castle is located on the highest rocky spur, towards the sea, built in 970 AD. At the time of Pope Gregory IX the castle was destroyed by the troops of Venice and was rebuilt in the thirteenth century by Frederick II of Swabia , to protect the coast from invasions Turks from the 16th century. The castle is restored and open to visitors, consisting of an irregular rectangular stone plan.
Abbey of Santa Maria di Kàlena was built in the ninth century, and embellished with the style of the Apulian Romanesque style. After the splendor of the twelfth century, in 1420 it fell into decline. Today it is partially restored, after a long period of neglect. Built in the thirteenth century, the church has a Latin cross plan. Of interest is the interior with Latin inscriptions, a single nave and wooden ceiling covering. The altar is surmounted by a cross vault. The rough facade has two rosettes, while the tower bell tower is unfinished, without the ceiling.
Also known as the globe , Jalillo Beach is located in the westernmost part of the territory of Peschici, east of the beach of the marina of Peschici from which it is separated by a large rock and connected by a footbridge. Characterized by a very fine granulometry , Marina di Peschici extends for about 700 meters between the marina and the promontory on which the village of Peschici is perched on the East and the end of Monte Pucci on the West , for an average width of 45 meters
The trebuchetsthey are a typical presence of the coast of Peschici, which counts seven. The only trabbuchists still alive and able to build a trebuchet reside in Peschici and belong to the Ottaviano e Fasanella family. The trebuchets have a very complex architecture, made of wooden poles that intertwine with wires and pulleys: they are a very effective tool, especially on the coast of the Gargano, for fishing for passing fish.
