How to Start Your Back Swing to INCREASE Club Head SPEED | Tom Watson
How do you start your backswing? Well the one thing you don't want to do is you don't want to start your golf swing from a dead stop, meaning you don't want to start up there like this, not move anything and start from a dead stop like this and just move it back (Doing this will create tension, which robs the swing of club head speed at impact). You want to have something in motion to relief the tension in your fingers, hands, and arms. There are lots of different ways to do it. The two things I suggest you do are these. One, try to feel the weight of the club head, which maintains a light grip pressure (CRITICAL to maximize clubhead speed). You may just lift the club up and just allow your wrists to hinge a little bit like this. You can do what Mike Weir does and actually preview his backswing, he takes the golf club back there and comes back, that's actually a preview of the backswing. Gary Player will kick the right knee in, like this, which allows him to start his hip turn back and his shoulder turn back together like this. Jack Nicklaus, he just turns his head to the right like this, it clears his right shoulder so he can make a nice long full backswing. In my case, What I do, I just get the club up, make a few light grip pressure waggles like this and then hit it. Sam Snead kicks his right knee in by pushing down with his lead foot. The Legends did it many different ways. Find out what works best for you.
