The term "long Covid" is used to describe patients with severe Covid cases that continue long after the virus has left their system. Drs. Akiko Iwasaki and Aaron Ring have identified autoantibodies in samples of patients who have had COVID-19. Autoantibodies are antibodies (immune proteins) that mistakenly target and react with person's own tissues or organs. The Yale team has identified these autoantibodies in other systems of the body which might be the reason why patients develop specific conditions after the virus have left their body. More research is needed to determine if the long Covid patients have these autoantibodies but has the potential to possibly identify therapeutic targets for people suffering.
