We summon and call you forth to witness the BARRAGÁN FW20 collection, “BRUJERÍA”. This season, Victor Barragán invokes the mysticism of sacred Mexican witchcraft, natively known as brujería. During the time of the Mexican Inquisition, marginalized communities were outcasted as an attempt to eradicate superstitious practices deemed unacceptable. Pushed to the outer fringes of society, intergenerational tribes of brujos and brujas strengthened in community, and executed techniques of ecstasy and spiritual-energy healing. Women, in particular, performed sexual magic to combat widespread patriarchal domination.
BARRAGÁN FW20 recontextualizes this folklore, and displays a modern interpretation of the era’s dark arts. Different shades of blue are prominent in the collection in expression of a blue flame, which is manifested through energies of power, strength, faith and protection. To symbolize immortality, fabric undergo a treatment technique using firearms dissociated with the commonality of blood in order to honor unbreakable spirit. The runway presentation follows last season’s CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund nomination, in which BARRAGÁN explored quite the opposite side of Mexican folklore, a colorful SS20 collection in reference to motifs around traditional celebrations. The brand has since reached a new level of visibility, further expanding upon its cult following.
