Capt. Phil Howarth is the proud owner of the Goose Hummock Tackle Shop in Orleans, MA, on Cape Cod. He first visited the shop on his honeymoon in 1994, and he claims it became the second love of his life!

Transfixed by a community steeped in history and at one with the outdoors, he long-planned to live here full-time. He moved with his family in 2012, and he and his wife Jan bought the store later that year. They have been working tirelessly ever since.

Besides equipment-related, the most common question he gets is, "What is a Hummock?"
A Hummock is a hill of earth that juts above the water's surface. Back in 1946, former governor Frank Sargent owned the marsh where Canadian geese used to stop and rest on its hummock. He built a "Tackle Shack" there and eventually moved it in 1950 to its current location.

There is nothing in his shop that you cannot buy elsewhere. What you cannot buy is their experience. All avid anglers, some of his staff fish more than 300 days a year. They know what you need and will only sell you what is right for you. Buying that level of knowledge cannot be found in a big box store or online.

Now a long-standing, vibrant member of the community, which teems with activity in the summer and is quiet in the winter, Phil has built a shop with a storied history and longevity. People don't just visit once. They keep returning year after year, and he does not take any of that for granted.
