Timo Salonen (Finland) wins New Zealand Auto Rally.
Timo Salonen of Finland won the New Zealand Auto Rally on Tuesday (2/7), increasing his lead in the overall drivers' championships to 28 points after seven events. But the Finn, driving a Peugeot, only just won ahead of works teammate and compatriot Ari Vatonen. After four days, Salonen finished in a competition time of 8 hours 29 minutes and 16 seconds, only one minute and 17 seconds ahead of Vatanen. Former world champion Walter Roehrl of West Germany faded over the final stages to take third place in an Audi Quattro. The current holder of the world title, Stig Blomqvist of Sweden, finished fourth.
