US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said he has cancelled plans to meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Geneva later this week. Washington’s top diplomat spoke at a February 22, 2022, press conference alongside Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba. Blinken’s announcement came a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow has recognised two separatist regions in Ukraine as “independent” and announced he would deploy "peacekeeping" forces to the areas. Blinken said that Russia’s actions indicated Moscow was not serious about a diplomatic path to resolving the crisis. US President Joe Biden said earlier that Putin's moves marked the beginning of a “new Russian invasion” of Ukraine and the US will respond with a first tranche of sanctions.
