Hog traps are becoming more popular as hunters and landowners seek to control the overpopulation of wild hogs on their property. Wild hogs not only compete for the indigenous species food but they cause billions in damage to farmers crops each year. Hog traps can be strategically placed and baited to draw in entire sounders at once which eliminates higher numbers with each successful trapping. As easy as it sounds hogs are a lot smarter than most people give them credit for. Many younger hogs will enter traps but the older and wiser "sows" can be a little skeptical, especially if they've been educated by previous hog trapping attempts. One of the key elements to a successful hog trap is the hog trap door. There are many versions of hog traps, hog trap gates, and triggers but the one I chose to build is a DIY guillotine style hog trap door which is triggered by shooting a target. We chose to go this route because our BigFoot cell cams quickly transmit the hogs arrival into the hog trap and then we move in within 60-100 yards to shoot the target when all the hogs have entered the corral. In this video we test the hog panel gate by shooting the trigger/target with multiple calibers to make sure it works without any issues. We'll then take you through the install process and final test.
There are many hog trap door designs but we landed on this simple to build concept which is cost effective and pretty easy to build. I just hope we can catch a lot of wild hogs in the near future!
Good luck catching those wild hogs! Stay tuned for future videos of us trapping hogs in our new hog trap.
God bless and thanks for watching!
