London’s metropolitan police chief has refused calls to resign over the actions of police at a vigil for murdered UK woman Sarah Everard.
Video footage showed officers forcibly removing women from the crowd in handcuffs at Clapham Common – after organisers were forced to cancel the weekend event due to COVID-19 concerns.
Thousands of people still attended the vigil despite the warning.
Commenting on the event, Police Chief Cressida Dick said she supported a review into polices’ actions.
“I understand why so many people wanted to come and pay their respects and make a statement about this. Indeed, if it had been lawful, I’d have been there,” she said.
“We didn’t want it to end like that, let’s have a review.”
