Stroke is an event that happens in the brain when there is a disturbance in the blood supply to the brain. So this can be that the blood supply has stopped or there is excessive bleeding into some areas if the brain. This can cause some damage to some structures of the brain . So if some structure of the brain is controlling the leg , the patients can have paralysis of the leg if they suffer stroke in that area. Similarly there are some areas in the brain that control our mood. People are prone to having left sided strokes are prone to developing depression . The cause of this could be there is directly some damage to the brain or because of the disability to the person is experiencing after a stroke, as a reduction to that they can become depressed. What are the symptoms? Persistent sadness, low mood, lack of motivation in doing daily activities, even death wishes, in severe cases there can be suicidal ideas also, the issue with not recognizing Post stroke depression is that it interferes with the recovery of the patient. Suppose the Post stroke patient has to attend rehabilitative exercise or they have to be compliant with their medical treatment, if they have depression they won’t be motivated to do that. There will be risk factors for Post stroke depression. Left side stoke arm or prone to causing Post stroke depression. People, who have family history or past history of psychiatric issues can have this problem and also people who don’t have proper support or severe symptoms are at more risk of developing. The treatment of Post stroke depression will involve medications and we also keep in mind that people are taking medications and decide accordingly. We give psychosocial support to the patient and we try to engage them in productive activities and try to get family members support.
