Venice will be forcing tourists to pre-book their visit via an app before they set foot inside the city, and will use other means to prevent overcrowding.
Airport-like turnstiles are being tested to control the flow of people, who could have to pay a daytrip charge of up to 16 dollars.
Authorities will also track everyone entering the city using a network of 468 cameras in a bid to combat over-tourism.
The system aims to place a physical limit on the number of people who can be in the city at any one time, but locals are concerned the new system could decimate the tourism industry.
