State and local taxes are generally deductible for federal income taxes in 2018 2019.
There are limitations, however, and some of them are recent changes to the tax law. The most common state and local taxes are state income taxes and property taxes.
State taxes are itemized deduction so the total itemized deductions would need to be greater then the standard deduction to help a taxpayer lower taxes.
There is also a cap on the amount of state and local taxes that are deductible as itemized deductions in 2018 2019.
