Explosive weapons such as shells, mortars and grenades pose an enormous threat to people in Libya. Hidden dangers can be found near homes, on farm land, near schools, hospitals and elsewhere. Our weapons clearance teams identify and safely destroy explosive weapons, either where they are found or in batches with controlled detonations.
In this film we join members of the team in Misrata including Khaled, a Mine Risk Education team leader, Ian, a deminer, and Paul, who is head of our operations to neutralise explosive weapons in Libya. We see the safe detonation of a grenade found on a farm and visit an area of land where hundreds of thousands of explosive weapons have been strewn across more than 150 hectares after the bunkers they were stockpiled in were destroyed during fighting. So far Handicap International have safely destroyed more than 112,000 weapons found in the area.
8 months of fighting and continuing instability has meant that perceptions of risk have been altered and the sheer amount of light weapons in circulation has meant that the number of people with gunshot injuries has increased dramatically. Our risk education teams work with communities and schools to raise awareness about the dangers and how people can minimise the risk of accidents by taking measures such as the safe storage of weapons.
