A red alert has been issued as Tropical Cyclone Gabrielle barrels across Norfolk Island.
Residents have been urged to take shelter as the category two system passes over, bringing rough seas, destructive winds and heavy rain.
Wind gusts of up to 140 kilometres an hour are possible and abnormally high tides are expected.
Cyclone Gabrielle is expected to hit New Zealand next, and warnings are now in place for the North Island.
