Sky News host Alan Jones says “the utterly disproportionate response to the so-called health crisis" has seen the abandonment of “fundamental freedoms” which ought to be available to Australians.
He said the economic crisis the nation was facing was also a consequence of the disproportionate response.
“It is all very well saying Victoria is a police state,” Mr Jones said.
“But I could go around every state with ridiculous and demeaning rules which are a denial of freedom, to say nothing about our entitlement to live your own lives.”
Mr Jones pointed to the rules allowing only 20 people at a wedding and requiring people at the beach remain a towel apart.
“This stuff is everywhere and there is no epidemiological justification for any of it,” he said.
Mr Jones discussed the anxiety the lockdown measures were causing Australians with Sky News contributor Catherine McGregor.
“People keep talking about roadmaps, but they’re all into cul-de-sacs,” Ms McGregor said.
“The constitution was drafted to sustain hardships.
“We were a functioning democracy.
“Here we are now, with the constitution being trampled on by elected governments.
“We’re seeing the concentration of executive power, government by fear with governments not sitting, or sitting on an abridged basis – there’s a lot to worry about.”
