A historic event - the official switching on of the lights on the first ever Christmas tree erected on the Coal Quay, Cork City, Ireland Wednesday, November 25th 2015.
Ho, Ho, Ho ... Christmas Tree on the Coal Quay
There was a great party atmosphere on the Coal Quay, Cornmarket Street Wednesday evening, November 25th last when the official switching on of the lights on the Christmas Tree took place. It was a historic event in that it was the first time a Christmas tree was ever erected on the Coal Quay. It was Sandra McCarthy of McCarthy Clothing & Footwear, Cornmarket Street who came up with the brilliant idea of erecting a Christmas Tree on the Coal Quay, supported by her husband James as well as PJ Coogan of Cork's 96FM and his colleagues, Deirdre O'Shaughnessy and Brenda Dennehy. Joining them at the celebrations were the Cork's 96FM Opinion Line team, the well known Cllr. Paudie Dineen who blessed the official occasion with the opening of a bottle of Champagne, Richard T. Cooke, Co-Organiser of the Coal Quay Family Festival, Brenda Twomey and family, Twomey's Shop, Mags O'Connor, the Cornstore along with other dealers and friends of the Coal Quay. James McCarthy officiated at the ceremony, saying it was a proud day for Cork City and every Corkonian and thanked Cork's 96FM, the Cork City Council and everybody else involved in the project. Invited guests were lavishly entertained by the very popular MuddyLee and the Coal Quay Shawlies singing songs about the good auld Coal Quay and Cork at Christmas time.
In Ireland, Christmas trees first became fashionable after the 2nd world war but it wasn't until some years later that they were available to buy on the Coal Quay. The Christmas tree standing proudly today reminds us of the great tradition of Christmas time on the Coal Quay.
