Security camera footage in Anchorage, Alaska recorded the actual audible sound and shockwave of the Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha'apaa eruption 10 hours later in the early morning at 0431 local time on 15 January 2022. A special Thank You to Andrea Corbin for allowing us to use her security cam footage.
The distance of Hunga Tonga from Alaska is around 9400 kilometers or 5800 miles. The sound from the eruption blast travelled around the globe. It could be heard up to 1500 km away. After that it was a low frequency sound (infrasound) too low to be heard by human ears. Only special instruments recorded it. However under the right atmospheric and environmental conditions a low frequency sound can reverberate creating an audible sound. The Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha'apai eruption boom recorded and heard as far aways as Alaska and was also heard in the Yukon.
