5 Tips to help you improve your Muay Thai sparring and boxing sparring, with TFC Trainers and former champions, Ben Johnston and Mitch Nicholson. These sparring tips and advice are not technique based, but more focus on what you should be thinking about before, during, and after training.
Tip 1: 1:00 Breathe right
Breathing right is essential to ensure you can give your best in sparring and a fight. We suggest diaphragm breathing with both your inhalation and exhalation coming via your nose. Of course there may be scenarios where you need to use your mouth (i.e. you're super exhausted), however, this should be avoided if possible.
Tip 2: 3:02 Intense not tense
It doesn't do you any favours being tense for the entirety of the spar/fight. In fact, it'll only burn you out quicker leaving you in a worse position. Keep your body relaxed but ready to swing into action when needed and your mind sharp at all times.
Tip 3: 5:26 Winning isn't the point
Winning every sparring session is not the goal, it is far more important that you and your sparring partner are improving. This should be something you remind yourself of before you get started as our ego can easily takeover. Remember, your sparring partners are there to help you, if they feel you're only out for yourself, they're less likely to want to help you.
Tip 4: 6:16 Get experimental
Sparring is a rare opportunity to experiment with new combinations, techniques and moves that aren't necessarily your strongest. This will allow you to work on developing a well-rounded skillset rather than one that relies heavily on one aspect of combat (i.e. just straight punch combinations).
Tip 5: 8:37 Have fun
You should be having fun and so should your partners. Improving in a martial art is a marathon not a sprint. Therefore, take good care of yourself and your partners. This will allow you to avoid injuries, have regular sparring partners and improve at an exceptional rate.
