Thai Boxing Institue Week in review for 8/7-8/12
This week’s techniques involved using your forearms to defend against hooks from both sides, in which you counter using different boxing and muay thai techniques. Punches, elbows or knees depending on your style.
We start off by demonstrating 3 different ways of defending against the hook. Yet again, depending on your style, which would dictate which one you decide to choose. Ideally learning all 3 gives you many options and personally i like to lean away from hooks, but yet again, ultimately it’s up to you.
The nuances of checking the hook.. Feet planted and weight settled, blocking arm tight to the head- closing the gap between your fist and shoulder while the opposite forearm stays fixed along the temple of your head.
Turning away from the hook in order to load up your counter, eyes still fixed on the target and unloading your shot.
The similarities in mechanics between the hook and the straight elbow allow you the options of either of those techniques as counters for the checked hook. Same torque of the midsection which lends to the options in counters.
First two options taught from the checked hook position are the lead hook counter, then a lead straight elbow counter with the distance adjusted using your back foot to step in. this style of footwork will allow you to close the distance and add a little more drive into your strike.
Finally, the last technique is a single arm clinch entry to a left knee from the checked left hook position.
Left arm grabs the left shoulder to secure your grip, switch stance, pull knee all in one motion.
I teach it in a sequence based on a rhythm of: Block, grab, switch, pull, knee.
I make it a point to emphasize the importance of pulling the target as you knee to accentuate the amount of driving force you can create for your knee.
Right side counter is the same just with the exclusion of the switch since we are attacking from our dominate stance. Block, grab, pull, knee.
Til' next week!
