By Ruth Nelson, PhD, Underidentification of Gifted Students
(2020, March 12) This video discusses the nuances of international testing results for the U.S. including that those less social advantaged students have increased in their achievement in the U.S. as compared to other similar countries and that the weighting for different subareas of math may lead to less valid conclusions. A recent study in MN is discussed highlighting underidentified groups of students (e.g., students of color, students with disabilities, females) and why that may be the case. It also examines why MN has fewer gifted programs than the national average (51% versus 64%). An interactive activity of a nonverbal assessment is given as well as three best practices for identifying underidentified groups for gifted services.
