When you are bombarded with OCD intrusive thoughts you might be on the hamster wheel of distraction. In fact it is the most common way to get relief from OCD intrusive thoughts. Unfortunately this avoidance only grows OCD in the long run.
On the other hand you don’t want to create a welcoming environment for OCD. You don’t want to sit quietly while OCD bombards you with upsetting thoughts and feelings.
In OCD therapy we often talk about re-focusing your attention to something you value or enjoy. This can confuse people, as it can seem, on the surface, that we are suggesting distraction.
