Battle Born were named the newest Hollywood stars at the Avalon Theatre in Los Angeles last night (August 20), after the Las Vegas-based b-boy crew stomped to victory in the Braun Battle of the Year USA qualifier.
Easy Rock (Los Angeles), Lego (Miami) and Moy (Houston) were judging the action at the competition where 50 b-boys competed for their ticket to the Braun Battle of the Year final in France in November.
Another 50 b-boys took part in the 2 vs. 2 Outbreak qualifier for a place in the Outbreak 7 Hip Hop festival in Orlando, Florida in December. Hundreds of fans packed the Avalon to watch the competitions, and when no battles were taking place, the crowd starting forming ciphers and battled each other.
Battle Born danced their way through a six minute first round show to come up against The Squadron crew from Los Angeles in the final. After a super tight contest, the 11-strong crew's moves, style and choreography won over the judges and they were named Braun BOTY US champions.
"Braun Battle of the Year US was an unbelievable competition," said Battle Born. "Just to beat The Squadron... It's a definition of super crew, they are a bunch of Spartans."
Aside from the stellar b-boying, DJs DJ Lean Rock (Boston), DJ Renegade (London, United Kingdom) and DJ Ervin (Los Angeles) kept the tempo high long into the night.
"After three years break, today's event was a good foundation for the future," said Thomas Hergenroether - organizer of the Braun Battle of the Year, breakdancer and founder of BOTY in 1990. "With Battle Born the right crew won, and they will have to do a lot of practicing until Montpellier though to be able to compete with international competitors."
Judge Moy said, "Braun BOTY is a great opportunity for the youngsters to get their name out there and important to support them and represent other events like this."
As American qualifiers, Battle Born now have to begin preparing for the Braun BOTY final, the world's biggest and longest running b-boying competition, which will be in Montpellier, France on November 19.
"We want to bring this back to the origins of BOTY: crew battles, crew shows, family. Thanks to Thomas (Hergenroether), BOTY and Braun," said Battle Born. "BOTY is a dream and this dream came true now - we will be trying to bring the title back to the US."
