Recent onset of foggy conditions, are no doubt harmful for terrestrial and air traffic but it has some beneficial aspects too. As regards wheat crop, major portion of this crop was planted well in time this year. As compared to the normal seasons, early planted crop was negatively suffering from rather a higher degree of temperature. Tillering capacity was affected for the want of low temperature and an earlier jointing stage was faced especially where less fertilizer was used. This foggy spell has lowered the temperature.
Foggy weather is likely to prevail for three weeks or so during these days. Irrigation should not be applied in the wheat crop planted after rice in the heavy soils of rice zone. These have more water holding capacity. 1st or 2nd irrigation during foggy days may lead to root suffocation and wheat may face excess water stress. However, light irrigation may be applied in the light or sandy soils anywhere preferably in Thal area and south Punjab.
Irrigation is considered very important source to convey, mobilize and absorb nutrients in wheat and most crops. Wheat planted after rice is still at 1st irrigation stage but 2nd irrigation is due in the 3rd week of December in central and south Punjab. In the scenario of annual canal closure, 2nd irrigation has gained more importance.
Farmers are asking a question about spray of herbicide or foliar fertilizers on their crops to achieve better yield, health, growth and development of plants. But weather conditions are not so much favorable for such activities. Spray of these items is not recommended in such conditions of weather because there is a chance of loss of precious herbicide or fertilizer. Because the ability of plants to absorb different nutrients through their leaves decreases up to very high extent because on such a low temperature and in the absence of sun light, there are chances of its loss. Because activities of food formation in plants slows down very much in these conditions. Also, another spell of rain is expected to come in Punjab at the end of third week of January. So, it is better to avoid any such activity before rain. It should be shifted to clear days after rain. Foliar applications have their crucial and important role in production technology of crops. These techniques proved to be very useful in area deficient in water such as rain fed areas of Pakistan.
