Initial bike cost with luggage and touring upgrades: $5,000 +/-
Leather gear, quality helmet, rain gear $1500 +/-
ScottOiler chain lubrication system $100
K&N Air filter with cleaner and oil $60

In 50k miles (all DIY):
10 oil changes totaling $250
1 set of chain and sprockets $250
Tires: set at 6k (orignal junk), set at 21k, set at36k set at 51k, total $1000
Brake pads at 40k $60
Clean K&N air filter every 20k or so, free.
Fork seals soon, probably clutch before 100k so the 50k to 100k interval will be a little more money than the 0-50k.

39mpg
$120 a year registration
$100 a year liability only insurance.

This is about the cheapest transportation you can get in southern California. Not factoring medical bills of course.
