How to fix shoulder pain
Shoulder pain is often a result of a lack of strength and not a lack of flexibility. Learning to properly engage the muscles of the upper back and shoulder can greatly improve performance & function and decrease pain.
This video teaches a great exercise to help improve shoulder strength by engaging the shoulder blade (scapular) retractors (pulling the shoulder blades together toward the midline of the body) and depressors (pulling the shoulder blades down away from the head).
Most people are unaware of how to 'seat' their shoulders. This exercise teaches the correct contraction of the lower trapezius and serratus anterior muscles of the back.
This is great exercise for anyone who is "upper trap dominant" - meaning that the shoulders 'shrug' up a lot and create that feeling of tension in the back of the neck toward the shoulder and back.
