Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer convicted of murdering George Floyd in 2020, pleaded guilty to two counts of tax evasion on Friday in Washington County District Court.[0] The charges stem from between 2014 and 2019 when he and his now-ex-wife, Kellie, underreported nearly half a million dollars in joint income. In July 2021, Chauvin was sentenced to 21 years in prison on federal charges of violating George Floyd’s civil rights at the time of Floyd’s murder in May 2020.[1] He is also serving 22 1/2 years in state murder and manslaughter charges. He is serving the sentences at the same time.[2]
Chauvin appeared for the sentencing hearing via Zoom from a federal prison in Tuscon, AZ, where he is currently serving his sentence.[3] He discussed the financial difficulties he and his then-wife were having, which led to the charges being filed.[1] His ex-wife has already pleaded guilty to her role in the tax fraud and is scheduled to be sentenced in May.[4] She has agreed to three years of probation, community service, and restitution of $37,868.
The 13-month sentence for Chauvin will be concurrent to the sentence he is already serving for murdering George Floyd and he will not serve any additional time.[5] The plea deal with his former wife means that she will not serve any prison time either, although she will still likely face three years of probation, community service and be required to pay restitution.
