Gukesh was invited to play at the Gashimov Memorial 2022. It's a rapid and blitz tournament held in Baku, Azerbaijan, in the loving memory of Vugar Gashimov, one of the best chess players in the world, who passed away too soon in 2014, at a tender age of just 27 years. Since 2014, the Gashimov Memorial is being held. This year's edition has some very strong players like Rapport, Mamedyarov, Wang Hao, Shankland, Vallejo Pons and local Azeri players.
In the rapid section Gukesh had 2 wins, 3 draws and 4 losses. He ended with 7 points (2 points for a win). Nodirbek Abdusattorov finished on top of the table with 14.0/18. But the tournament is far from over. That's because the points of the blitz event starting from today will be added to players' rapid score.

This is a big win for Gukesh, because when the game was played, Rapport was ranked no.3 in the world for rapid ratings.
