(8 Jan 2015) French tech makers ARCHOS are helping smart phone users take their devices to the next dimension.
They've developed a pair of virtual reality glasses which turn typical smart phones into a 3D screen.
They may look like a pair of goggles from another era, but these glasses are taking today's technology into a new reality.
Developed by French company ARCHOS, these virtual reality 3D glasses use regular smart phones to create a stereoscopic viewer.
Once users have downloaded the 3D app, they then mount their phone on the back of the VR Glasses, strap the viewer onto their head, and then enjoy three dimensional views through their smart phone screen.
The device fits phones measuring between 4.5 inches and 6 inches wide.
"Here are the ARCHOS VR Glasses and combined together, you can have a fully 3D effect," says ARCHOS product manager, Geoffrey Bitard.
"In order to get the 3D, three-dimensional effects with the VR glasses. 3D has to be split into two parts, so you can see each part either from right or left, but then, your brain is going to merge both images into only one and this image will be 3D. First of all, you have to adjust the VR glasses and then, slide into the VR glasses the phone. You can adapt any phone, any smart phone - even iPhone or Android phone. Starting from 4.5-inch to 6-inch. Kids, adults, if you like to see in 3D this is the perfect tool."
Virtual reality is one of the top trends at this year's CES with companies including Facebook-owned Oculus Rift showing off their latest prototype headsets.
According to analyst, Steve Brumer, wearable technology such as headsets are very popular right now.
"What is selling well without giving it away or going to be specific market segment - wearables," he says.
"I do think that you're going to see a lot more in the clothing, more Google Glass but kind of headset type programs that are there integrated into certain things."
The ARCHOS VR Glasses are available now for $29.99 USD.
The International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) runs 6-9 January 2015.
The annual technology event is showcasing over 3,500 exhibitors including big tech companies like Sony, Samsung and LG.
