CBSE Class 10 Science Chapter 11 - Human Eye and Colourful World - What leads to the formation of Rainbow in the Sky. Before understanding this lets find out what is a glass prism and what happen when a white light passes through a prism. Prism is a glass object which has three rectangular faces and 2 triangular faces. When the light ray passes through one of its rectangular faces it gets dispersed into 7 different color light rays i.e. Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange and Red. This happens because all the 7 different colored light rays have different refractive index and hence refract at a different angle when moving from glass to air. This phenomena is known as the Dispersion of light and is the reason behind the formation of the rainbow
