John's techniques seem to live on today in many top discus throwers.
They both start out the throw with a low wind and relatively tall chest. They both create a separation between lower and upper body I refer to as ‘X’. Čeh has a remarkable ability to hold this position ever better than John did.
As they begin the first turn both feet twist together. John’s concept was of the discus as a hammer turn. He wanted two feet on the ground as long as possible and return to that position as the front as quickly as possible. This became the left to left sprint and the low, narrow sweeping of the feet.
Looking at the feet in this first turn you can see John turns his left foot much more than Čeh and because of that can lead more with the top of this thigh. Čeh does more of a crossover step because of this left foot and ends up leading more with the inside of the thigh in the middle.
The first ‘step’ into the middle, think running down hill, is short and the left foot landing in long creating a wide base. This also helps keep the lower body ahead of the upper. John talked about picking a focal point where the discus points when the left foot touches down. This works to be about 10 o’clock.
With this focal point he wanted to see both the discus and it when the left foot landed. Čeh seems to this better than anyone in the world as you can see it’s almost as if his head rotates to the right opposite of the turning direction as he pivots in the middle. This creates a very long pull on the discus and allows him to catch it way far back.
In the finish they both continue to turn the right foot and then jump out of it forward straight into the reverse. The axis of rotation is more around the left side using the right arm and shoulders as part of the lever arm.
