Gervonta Davis remains undefeated, holding onto his WBA lightweight world champion title and continuing his reputation as a knockout artist.
In a thrilling eighth-round knockout, "Tank" bested the previously undefeated Frank "The Ghost" Martin, improving his record to 30-0 with 28 KOs. Despite a 14-month hiatus, Davis appeared as sharp as ever.
The decisive moment came when Davis landed an uppercut that left Martin defenseless, setting up a left hook that ended the fight.
Initially, Martin controlled the fight, even after Davis entered the ring to the "Ghostbusters" theme song, a playful nod to Martin's nickname. Martin dominated the early rounds, successfully maintaining distance from Davis.
The match evened out in the fourth and fifth rounds before Davis took control in the seventh. Despite possibly trailing on the scorecards, Davis' powerful punches began to connect, leading to an inevitable conclusion.
"I knew he was going to tire," Davis said post-fight. "I let him tire himself out, then I started picking him apart."
Martin attributed his loss to becoming too complacent. He retreated to the ropes in the later rounds, losing his early momentum.
"I felt in control at first, but then got too comfortable," Martin admitted. "I stopped moving and he took advantage."
Gervonta Davis Reflects on Personal Growth
This fight marked Davis' return to the ring since his victory over Ryan Garcia on April 22, 2023. Shortly after, Davis served 44 days in jail for violating the terms of a sentence related to a 2020 hit-and-run incident.
Davis expressed that his time in jail had a positive impact on him. "It taught me patience and made me a better person," he said. "I've grown as a father, an athlete, and I aim to continue improving."
While Davis didn't name a specific future opponent, he acknowledged interest in Vasiliy Lomachenko, Shakur Stevenson, and Isaac Cruz as potential challengers.
