Australia and Papua New Guinea are the “greatest of friends” and the thread of indigenous and Torres Strait Islander ties between cultures “runs unbroken” in modern times, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says.
“Australia and Papua New Guinea are the closest of neighbours, we are the greatest of friends,” Mr Albanese said in Papua New Guinea Parliament on Thursday.
“For thousands of years Torres Strait Islanders and the indigenous traders of PNG shared culture and kinship, exchanging goods and ideas, that thread runs unbroken through us today.
“We are friends, we are mates, we are partners, we are equals, we are neighbours who stand with each other and help each other in times of need.”
