February 6, 1988 - At this point in time, Boston Celtics forward Larry Bird was the only player to win in the NBA 3-Point Shootout's short history. His grasp of that crown appeared tenuous in 1988, trailing Dale Ellis by eight points with just two racks remaining. But then Bird did Bird stuff, connecting on eight of his final 10 shots, including a contest-clinching money ball as he walked with a triumphant finger pointed to the sky.
Injuries would prevent Bird from seeking a fourth consecutive 3-Point Shootout title in 1989. He'd return in 1990, scoring 13 points and finishing sixth in his final shootout appearance.
