Nick Algie:
'For me the Single Track Minds - Kalamunda 50:50 is a favourite, it takes in the best trails of the amazing Kalamunda singletrack resource we are so lucky to have on our doorstep. It was the first race where I had a decent result, winning the masters back in 2014. 2015 didn’t go so well, I was super excited and focused on a great result but wasn’t careful about watching for trail markings and missed a turn and DNF’d. This year I felt I wanted to make up for my mistake the previous year.
The morning of the race was sunny but super chilly with frost in the valleys. Fellow #CycliqAthlete Glen Hill and I soon realised the only way to warm up was lizard style basking in the sun. Fortunately the race started with a neutral zone behind a car for the first kilometre or so to get the legs spinning. Then the car took off and the massive bunch stretched out as we sped up Mt Gungin. It’s a long climb up mostly gravel roads and fire trails. Everyone knows how important it is to be in a good position at the top of the hill as the only way down is via oodles of singletrack and you don’t want to be held up by a roadie who climbs great but can’t shred skinny dirt! This in mind I tried to turn my pain receptors off and hold a good position to the top, just managing to sneak past freaky fast Brett Stapleton before we entered the trails and pointed downhill. From there the race was a sublime mixture of flow trails, interspersed with rock gardens and the odd fire road grind to keep the legs honest. From about 30km onwards I was on my own just losing touch with Matt Peterson in front of me. I crossed the line happy with the result, 8th overall and 2nd in the Masters age group.
Hanging out in the sun talking rubbish with fellow riders and supporters sipping “recovery” ciders at the Core Cider House is the best après race scene going. We soaked it up.’
