This marked the first time that the tournament had been taken place in Asia and outside the traditional heartland of rugby union. The 9th edition of the Rugby World Cup was held in Japan from 20 September to 2 November 2019.
The International Rugby Board (IRB), now known as World Rugby, has requested that any member unions wishing to host either the Rugby World Cups in 2015 or 2019, should indicate their interest by 15 August 2008. A record 10 unions indicated interest in staging either the 2015 and/or the 2019 events.
The 2019 tournament received interest from nine different nations. At a special meeting on 28 July 2009, the IRB confirmed that England would host the 2015 Rugby World Cup and that Japan would host the 2019 edition. The Dublin-based global governing body of rugby had voted 16-10 in favour of approving the recommendation from Rugby World Cup Ltd. that the two respective countries should be named hosts.
The tournament was won by South Africa, just after the Springboks beat England 32−12 in the final to claim their third title, which equaled the All Blacks' record. In doing so, South Africa became the first team to win the World Cup after losing a match in the pool stages. The All Blacks, the defending champions, finished third after defeating Wales in the bronze final.
The official TV titles for the 2019 Rugby World Cup has been produced by Milan-based design and motion studio 2Sharp, but this here is a prototype variation, noticing that it has many differences compared to the final version, which was eventually used during the official broadcasts of the tournament.
