Hey guys this week I tackled another extreme Ikea makeover.I took the Tarva nightstand from Ikea and tried to dupe the Conrad cabinet from Arhaus. I have been obsessed with the Arhaus piece for a while but not obsessed with the price. So I planned out how to take the $40 Tarva nightstand and give it similar look and feel as the Arhaus piece.
Step One:
This was an easy step getting rid of the drawers and adding a shelf. I used a project board that I cut down to fit in-between these two piece of wood. Using pocket hole and screws I screwed the piece in place.
Step two: Adding backing
I took a thin piece of plywood cut that down to size and added it to the back of the Tarva so that the whole back is covered up.
Supplies:
Step three: Changing up the legs.
I cut the leg of the Tarva down and using wood glue and a screw attached it to a oak spindle that I cut down. This Dave me a similar profile and look as the Arhaus piece.
Step 4: Making a door
I used a project board and cut it down to 16 1/4 inch wide and 20 1/2 inch long. Then using a pattern I made traces the curve shape that the Conrad Cabinet from Arhaus has. Then using my jigsaw I cut out the shape. Once I have to identical doors I used a chair rail trim and cut that down and glued it to each door to make the fluting.
Step 5: Painting and Staining
The Arhaus piece has this really unique finished to it. So I knew if I got the painting and stain right this was going to really sell this dupe. I started off staining the doors and nightstand. I used about 4 different colors over each piece. By using all these different colors and mixing the stained together. This created a natural weathered look to the piece. Then to take it a step further once the stain was dry. I took some black paint and lightly painted and stippled that over the doors, body and legs. I think this ended up giving this piece a very similar antique distressed look.
Step 6: Putting it together and adding hardware
This was a pretty easy step. I attached the doors, added a match clasp and added the handles. Then finished off the piece with adjusting the coloring just a little bit with some sanding then finished off with some furniture wax.
