Pruning this beautiful Japanese maple bonsai to push energy into three thread grafts. This stunning red-green-red maple was sold as a Seigen, but appears to have the characteristics of a Deshojo-like cultivar of Acer palmatum.
Clonex Rooting Hormone. (Available at any decent gardening big box store or Amazon.)
I used the Gray cut paste with the green label written in Japanese (Can find on Amazon or other bonsai websites.)
Edit to add: In the video I call this tree a ‘Seigen’ Japanese maple. After filming, I learned that this false ‘Seigen’ entered the US nursery trade sometime around 2010-2015 and has been widely propagated. It shares all the common characteristics of Deshojo, but strangely appears to have an even more striking red spring color than the other Deshojo and Shin Deshojo that i purchased in US Nurseries. This tree also seems to more consistently show a nice summer/heat induced variegation of pink or pale pink/white.
