On 30th July 2002, we witnessed an Ian Thorpe 400m Freestyle World Record at the Manchester Commonwealth Games, which remains to this day one of the best World Record swims ever!
Although racing Australian team mate and specialist in the 1500m, Grant Hackett, Ian Thorpe was able to swim one of the most near perfect swims, both technically and tactically, that you'll ever likely to see.
In this video from Propulsion Swimming, we celebrate the 20 year anniversary of one of the finest swims that the sport of swimming has ever seen by breaking it down and given it a review.
7 years later, the World Record was broken. Paul Biedermann's 400m Freestyle World Record at the Rome 2009 World Championships broke it by the smallest margin possible of 0.01.
With streamlining off turns and with a better finish, should Thorpe have been the first sub 3:40 400m Freestyler?
