This video provides recommendations for police departments establishing community outreach and engagement programs to prevent violent extremism and promote public safety. It presents the results of a research project, “The Challenge and Promise of Using Community Policing Strategies to Prevent Violent Extremism,” by David Schanzer (Duke University), Charles Kurzman (UNC Chapel Hill), Jessica Toliver (Police Executive Research Forum (PERF), and Elizabeth Miller (PERF). These researchers surveyed, interviewed, and visited police departments across the country, and conducted focus groups with Muslim Americans to better understand the community's feelings about how Muslim Americans are treated by law enforcement.
The research project was funded by the National Institute of Justice, U.S. Department of Justice, but the views expressed in the video are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the positions of the Department of Justice.
