My wife does Bullet Journaling, and has loads of pens that were kind of a mess, so I made her a Pen Holder. She loves it!
She also uses it every day, which makes us both happy.
I made it out of glass green acrylic and a small piece of old teak.
This is my favorite video to date, I hope you like it! Please like and subscribe.
This video does not have any narration, since I wanted to experiment with cutting it like a music video, but I think if you watch it carefully you could easily reproduce this thing. I have included on screen graphics and text where necessary.
Some notes about the project:
1. I'm pretty sure the teak is old growth - I got it from a friend who had chopped up and stripped some sort of antique teak tabletop.
2. When you use teak -- especially old growth teak -- you need to wipe it with acetone or something similar before gluing, or the glue will fail due to the oils in the wood. I didn't have acetone, but lacquer thinner seemed nasty enough to get the job done.
3. Based on my research, Titebond III seems to be the most suggested glue for this kind of oily wood. In the video you see a bottle of Titebond II on the table, but I'm actually using Titebond III.
4. I cut the dadoes the way I did to make it easer to deal with them. Cutting them first, out of the rectangular wood, was slightly wasteful. I do like how the grain ended up being parallel to the pens, though, so that was a happy accident.
5. You may notice that I used CA glue to hold the little piece of wood that aligns the acrylic sheets. Wood glue would have been stronger, but the sheets are really held in place by the hot glue I used, so strength wasn't a top priority.
6. I used my Glowforge to cut the acrylic. So, you would need a laser cutter to make this project exactly the same way I did, but you could use this design in a much simpler way to make the exact same thing out of plywood. I made a crummy prototype that way, and if I'd spent more time on it, it could have looked much better.
Thanks for watching!
