Nationals Senator Matt Canavan says the attempted assassination of Donald Trump was an “attack on democracy” which was “repelled” by the bravery of Donald Trump.

Former US president Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt at his rally in Pennsylvania over the weekend.

Despite sustaining an injury to his ear from a flying bullet, the former president is still expected to attend the Republican National Convention on Tuesday.

“The Prime Minister was right that it was an attack on democracy, but it was an attack ultimately repelled by the defiance, the resilience, and bravery of Donald Trump,” Mr Canavan told Sky News host James Morrow.
