The purpose of the evaluation was to determine the suitability of the lightweight, man portable flame thrower E36-7 (modified M9-7), for use by the Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces (RVNAF) in counterinsurgency operations. The evaluation consisted of monitoring and observing the use of E36-7 flame throwers by elements of the RVNAF Marine Brigade, Special Forces Command, Airborne Division, Ranger Command, and the US 173d Airborne Brigade. The evaluation report was based upon analysis of user interviews, user questionnaires, and observation by Army Concept Team in Vietnam (ACTIV) evaluators. It was found that the flame thrower performed as rated and is suitable for use by RVNAF in a training environment. The flame throwers were not used sufficiently in combat to judge performance or suitability under combat conditions based on limited combat usage, it is concluded that there is no special role for the lightweight flame thrower in counterinsurgency operations.
