Pop culture tells us that Hell is a place filled with flames presided over by the Devil, who tortures damned souls and maybe pokes them with his pitchfork from time to time. Cartoonish imagery aside, the popular concept of Hell is that of a place in which sinners are separated from God to suffer for eternity. Often, it's depicted as a huge torture chamber housed in another plane of existence.
