The kids enjoy to do everything on their own. Give them the right direction and support and they will definitely learn.
Start Early - The early you start the early they learn. The kids who start self feeding early have better coordination and precision of bringing food to their mouth than those who starts late. If you want your child to feed themselves independently then now is the time.
- You can start self feeding after the age of 6 months.
- In the beginning, you can start with a soft silicon spoon or a small spoon which is easy to hold.
- Offer food with thick consistency which can easily get stick to the spoon. Start with porridge, mashed veges or pudding.
- Help the child by putting your hand on top of theirs and guide them through all the steps of scooping.
- At the initial stage, fill the spoon on your own and give it to the baby. They will slowly learn to fill it on their own.
- Use 2 spoons during mealtime. Keep one in your hand and guide them how to fill the spoon and take it to their mouth. Hand them over the other spoon if they drop the one in their hand.
Have Patience-
- Every kid will learn spoon/self feeding at their own pace. You have to be a little patient. Support them and guide them through the journey of new learning.
- Toddlers can self feed themselves with a spoon when they are closer to 2 years. However, most kids are capable of learning at a much younger age if given an opportunity.
- Mess is a part of kid’s learning process. Have patience and give all opportunities to the child to explore the food. Remember, it will not be messy forever.
Stay consistent
- No change happens overnight. It starts with a desire and one small step in the right direction. Stay positive and consistent.
