The 2021 NBA Playoffs have been absolutely crazy so far. First, we don’t have any superteams in the Finals thus giving us truly exciting and competitive basketball. Secondly, the fact that Chris Paul or Giannis Antetokounmpo has a chance to win their first ring is incredible for all of their fans as well as for the fans of their respective franchises. And thirdly, we are finally seeing young players taking over the NBA. Luka Doncic, Ja Morant, DeAndre Ayton, and the most improved player in my opinion, Trae Young. The Ice Tray completely took over the team during those Playoffs and was the main reason why the Hawks have outperformed all the expectations put on them if there were any. Maybe it’s a sign that the newer generation is finally stepping up to take the lead over the league in the upcoming years? We’ll see and today we will do what a lot of NBA fans like to do. We will compare players to each other, and considering this year’s Playoffs I have one important comparison I would like to talk about. Am I the only one who thinks that Trae Young is very similar to Golden state warriors’ star Stephen Curry in his earlier years?
Today we’ll analyze and try to compare those two players, and try to predict the future of the very talented young guard from Texas. Let’s start with Stephen Curry:
Steph’s third year with the league was back in the 2011 - 2012 season where he obviously played for the Golden State Warriors in their starting five. That year Curry also showed his playmaking skills.

Now, let’s see Trae’s third year stats:
In his third year, Trae has already been viewed as the superstar of the young Atlanta Hawks team playing 33.7 minutes on average. Young was the main factor for the Atlanta Hawks and he didn’t disappoint finishing 14th in the race among the league’s best scorers with 25.3 points a game which is 10.6 points more than Curry put up in his third year, although Trae had a 5.2 percent worse field goal percentage and of course, Young is nowhere near Steph Curry in terms of a long-range game having made 11.2 percent less 3 pointers than Curry. Another important thing is the field goal percentage where we can see that Steph has made 7.7 fewer shots percentage-wise from the charity stripe in comparison to Trae’s 88.6 percent on average. Trae Young is an exceptional player when it comes to drawing fouls and that’s a fact. Also, Young has shown incredible playmaking putting up 9.4 dimes a game which is 4.1 more than Curry got in his third year. As for defense, Trae got 3.9 rebounds contrary to Steph’s 3.4 boards and steal-wise Young stripped the ball 0.7 times less than Curry did with 0.8 steals per game. One of the biggest differences however is the turnover rate where Young took 3rd place in the league in this negative stat with 4.1 turnovers while Curry had his best season turnover-wise, losing the ball 2.5 times per game.
The next important thing to compare is the two players’ Playoffs. Stephen Curry debuted in the Playoffs in his 4th year. The Warriors didn’t win the series back then but this year Philly just couldn’t find an answer for Trae who was outperforming all the expectations steamrolling into the Conference Finals.

Many NBA fans think of Trae Young as some sort of cross between Steph Curry and Steve Nash and I think that’s the closest comparison we can get for this young man. Not many would agree with me but I really think that Trae is ahead of Steph at his age especially considering that Curry was still finding his way at Trae’s age. What I can say for sure is that Trae Young definitely has all the tools to become as close to the all-time great point guards as Stephen Curry does.
